Yoshihiko Takahashi (1958 - )

Glass

Born 1958, Tokyo. Studied glassmaking at Tama Art University and became a glass artist after attending the World Crafts Congress in Kyoto while still a student. Inspired by the international artists at the conference, who were exploring free expression in glass, Takahashi has since incorporated a variety of methods into his work. In particular, his hot-work pieces, in which he handles molten glass, make use of the viscosity and movement of the glass as he creates them. The soft forms and smooth surfaces are formed through controlled and fluid movements of the principle forces applied to the material, such as the weight of the molten glass and centrifugal forces. Takahashi's works have a somewhat enigmatic appearance and invite the viewer's imagination as to how they feel, as he works with the material in a playful way, interacting with the reactions of the glass.

1980　Graduated from Tama Art University, Faculty of Art and Design, Department of Three-Dimensional Design, Product Design Specialisation, Craft Design Course

1982-84　Assistant at the Glashaus am Vasaturm Werkstätte (Rheinbach, Germany)

1984　First solo exhibition in Munich

1985　Opened a studio in Sagamihara, Kanagawa Prefecture.

2011　‘Yoshihiko Takahashi ☆ Glass', a large-scale exhibition at the Crafts Gallery of the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo.

2012 - Professor at Tama Art University
