ALIVE5 Sadaharu Horio_A thousand paintings made from scrap wood

2023.10.7(Sat) - 10.22(Sun)

Open : 13:00 - 19:00

Closed : Tue, Wed

Artist Sadaharu Horio, who passed away in 2018 just before his 80th birthday, was a member of the Gutai Art Association from the mid-1960s until the dissolution of the association. Our gallery has organized an exhibition [ALIVE, The Art of Continuing to Live], which consists mainly of Sadaharu Horio's works, over a period of four exhibitions starting in 2019. Sadaharu Horio's way of life and his talent have involved many artists and people around him.

In this fifth exhibition, we present a worthwhile series of paintings from "Untitled/A Tale of 1000 GO 1000 Pictures", a series of one thousand paintings born from his passion and the activities that supported Horio.

This series was created in 2016 when Horio's own image of "wanting to paint a thousand size paintings" led fellow artists to gather at Kita Gallery in Nara with the idea that "a thousand paintings would be possible", and improvised on a thousand panels of various sizes made from scrap wall material from the event venue. The work was created by improvising on 1,000 panels of various sizes, which were made from wall scraps from the event site. The work is an overwhelming experience for the viewer, with the natural action, dynamism and conviction of Horio giving new life to scrap wood with his artistry. The people involved in the project felt that they were no match for the power and talent of Horio's production.

The long-awaited raisonné of the series will be published. We would like to invite you to both exhibitions so that you do not miss this precious opportunity.
With the cooperation of the galleries, families and foundations with which we are associated, we are very pleased to be able to introduce the artists' rare way of life as we uncover it.
