Toyoharu Miyazaki (1946 - )
Sculptor
Born in 1946 in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture. After graduating from Kanazawa College of Art with a degree in sculpture, he moved to Kobe, where he has since continued to produce and present his work mainly in the Kansai region. He is known for using iron as a material to create singular three-dimensional works based on his own body and personal surroundings. In the late 1970s, he began producing sculptures made from iron under the title 'Body Models'. He attracted attention with works based on personal memories and sensations, such as incorporating the sizes of the artist's own various body parts and the environment and landscape that surrounds him.
In the late 1980s, he began the 'Garden Below' series, in which a deeper world of work emerged, transformed by a subjective sense of time and space.
In addition to an invited exhibition at "Art Now" at the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Modern Art, he has exhibited abstract sculptures in Japan and abroad, mainly in solo shows. He uses iron as a material and uses familiar nature and plants as motifs, characterised by a treatment that does not make the viewer feel the coldness of iron as a material.
