【Hiroto Nakanishi Art Book "Emerging Forms" Exhibition — Opening Notice @Moriokashoten, Tokyo】

Starting Tuesday, August 25, Moriokashoten in Ginza, Tokyo will host a solo exhibition by woodcarving artist Hiroto Nakanishi: the "Hiroto Nakanishi Art Book 'Emerging Forms' Exhibition."

The venue, Moriokashoten, is "the bookstore that sells only one book," located on the ground floor of the Suzuki Building — completed in 1929 and designated as a Tokyo Selected Historic Building. In this space, where a single book takes center stage each week, this exhibition comes about on the occasion of the publication of Nakanishi's first monograph, "Emerging Forms." The show unfolds in a space where the textures of this historic building and the light filtering through its windows meet the accumulated time held within the wood itself.

It is a rare opportunity to encounter, in this quiet bookstore tucked into a corner of Ginza, the work of an artist who has spent years listening to the voice of wood. We hope many of you will be able to visit.

Hiroto Nakanishi

Born in 1984 in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture. After studying woodworking and furniture making in Gifu Prefecture, he became an independent woodcarver in 2008 and began his career in 2010, working mainly through solo exhibitions.

In autumn 2011, feeling the limitations of working in an urban setting, he established a home and studio in a former telephone exchange building in Shiga Prefecture. Rather than using commercially milled lumber, Nakanishi works with logs he encounters at any given moment — wood damaged by insects or decay, trees felled by natural disasters, and thinned timber.

His practice is guided by the belief that a work does not begin with searching for material to fit a concept or image, but rather from a dialogue with material that only he happens to encounter at that particular time. Listening closely to the voice of the wood itself, he continues to create vessels and objects.

Moriokashoten

Located in Ginza 1-chome, Tokyo, on the ground floor of the Suzuki Building — a structure completed in 1929 and designated as a Tokyo Selected Historic Building. The shop occupies a compact space of roughly 5 tsubo (about 16.5 m²) and was opened in 2015 by proprietor Yoshiyuki Morioka.

Moriokashoten is known for its distinctive concept of "a bookstore that sells only one book." Each week the shop features a single title, alongside a related exhibition of original artwork or other material connected to that book. Morioka arrived at this concept after eight years working at an antiquarian bookshop in Jimbocho and, later, running numerous curated exhibitions at his own Morioka Shoten in Kayabacho before going independent.

Despite its small footprint, it draws a steady stream of visitors from Japan and abroad, and is regarded as one of Ginza's landmark gallery-bookshops.
