Guna Nakayama Solo Exhibition “loose” @ IAF SHOP

We are pleased to announce the solo exhibition “loose” by Goo Nakayama, opening this Friday at IAF SHOP.

Goo Nakayama has been presenting independently organized exhibitions on an irregular basis in Iki Island, Nagasaki Prefecture—his birthplace—as well as in Fukuoka. In this exhibition, loose, visitors will once again be able to encounter the raw breath and worldview of the artist himself.

The artist will be present at the venue on December 27 and 28. We sincerely look forward to welcoming you.

One year ago, the day before installing my solo exhibition at IAF SHOP,

suddenly, my breathing stopped

in the bedroom of my home.

My family called an ambulance.

Somehow my breathing returned,

and I saw the face of a paramedic in front of me.

“I’m sleepy. Go home.”

In a hazy state of consciousness,

I sent them away.

I, who am usually talkative, remained silent for the following week.

From that moment on, I became completely unable to write my work.

Many have said that an artist or calligrapher who can no longer write

is as good as dead—I have seen many such people.

My wife said,

“Didn’t Guna Nakayama die at that solo exhibition?”

If something cannot be written, I will not force myself to write it.

I cannot write by fabricating lies or forcing coherence.

As the end of 2025 drew near,

I contacted Mr. Sato at IAF SHOP.

“Is it possible to do a solo exhibition at the end of December?”

“It’s available.”

A dark garage.

I step on the FUZZ pedal.

Little by little, millimeter by millimeter,

I begin to move again.
