Open : 13:00 - 19:00

Closed : Tue, Wed

Born in Tokushima City, Tokushima Prefecture in 1937, contemporary artist Akiko Horio, who will turn 86 this year, has been attracting attention in recent years, starting with the 'Akiko Horio Today' exhibition at the Nishinwaki Okanoyama Museum of Art in Hyogo Prefecture in 2021, followed by the 'Listen to the Sound of the Earth Turning: Our Wellbeing since the Pandemic' exhibition at the Mori Art Museum last year, and this year's Her activities and presence have attracted attention in recent years, including being featured in the collection exhibition 'Frame and Wave'.

Akiko Horio began creating art at the age of 25 in 1962, and after being a member of the Gutai Art Association [1968 - 1972, dissolved], she continues to create works today, The work continues like a ritual over time, until the moment when the artist's senses are fulfilled. The small works are the size of a pint-sized finger, but once placed in a space, they have a depth and breadth that embraces the entire surroundings.

Akiko Horio's works, which often use familiar materials such as paper, packaging containers, pieces of wood and acrylic, project a multiple world of endlessly overlapping colours and shadows. Her works give viewers a fresh perspective and impression, as if to remind them that the everyday world in which we live is a world of infinite possibilities and aesthetics. We are delighted to be able to introduce the world of artist Akiko Horio, as we did last year.

I make art for myself first and foremost. With my eyes and my hands, I create what I want to see. If possible, I want to create something strong, deep and beautiful in my own way. Whenever I see a beautiful flower blooming on a weed, I want to create something like this. I am not aiming for simplicity, which is often said about my work, but rather I am trying to 'build my world' with the lines themselves, the colours themselves and the materials, and this is how it naturally came to be.
