'Reflection'.

In the act of looking, we sometimes catch a glimpse of our own perspective, apart from the fact that it is reflected in our eyes.

The reflection and the self born into it. The contrast is sometimes so cruel that it is almost unbearable.

Mayumi Inukai

When I confront Mayumi Inukai's work, I feel a quiet, tingling, sublime feeling of sorrow. The fragility and beauty of her paintings, with their delicate overlapping lines, ambiguous outlines and faintly luminous images. A woman's face is repeatedly drawn, but Inukai says she is not drawing a person. They are images received and reflected by the artist's own deep sensitivity, which eventually transcend the physical screen and field of vision, spreading and melting together like landscapes across the entire space, and drifting into this world. While being connected to the artist's own and the viewer's individual experiences and feelings, they quietly reach out to the universal questions that human beings hold and dissolve into the air like a mist. There is physical life and death from which there is no escape, or the life and death of the senses, which are born and disappear in the course of our days. It seems to me that this is both the uncertainty and the truth of existence that we can never ignore. Inukai's works sometimes seem violently cruel, but they are as beautiful as the corpses lying in front of us. They quietly illuminate this world like light born from quietly looking at oneself who cannot resist and continuing to accept it.
