【Akiko Horio — Invitation to Participate in the Toyota Municipal Museum of Art Collection Exhibition "One Room, One Artist" @ Toyota City, Aichi】

Starting Saturday, July 18, 2026, Akiko Horio, an artist represented by our gallery, will be participating in the collection exhibition "One Room, One Artist: Kenji Yanobe, Akiko Horio, Yoichi Umetsu, Kazuo Okazaki," which opened at the Toyota Municipal Museum of Art.

This exhibition is a thematic show that embodies the Toyota Municipal Museum of Art's ideal approach to collecting — one in which the museum acquires multiple works by a single artist and dedicates one gallery room exclusively to that artist's work, allowing visitors to encounter the artist's formative thinking and humanity. Across four exhibition rooms that differ in size and lighting conditions, the exhibition introduces the work of four artists — Kenji Yanobe, Akiko Horio, Yoichi Umetsu, and Kazuo Okazaki — from multiple angles.

From Akiko Horio, two works from the museum's own collection will be on view: Untitled (2019) and Untitled (2020). Please come see in person Horio's tranquil style, which combines everyday materials such as wood, paper, and mirrors to capture effects of light reflection and shadow.

Akiko Horio (Horio Akiko)

Born in Tokushima City in 1937. Graduated from the Tokushima University School of Medicine's affiliated nursing school in 1959. She began creating work around 1962, exhibited at the "Gutai New Artists Exhibition" in 1967, and became a member of the Gutai Art Association in 1968, remaining until its dissolution in 1972. After the group's dissolution, she held solo exhibitions at the Shinanobashi Gallery in Osaka and participated in group exhibitions centered primarily in Kyoto, Osaka, and Kobe. She has developed a body of work that combines everyday materials — wood, paper, mirrors, scraps of wire, and pen-drawn lines — to capture effects of light reflection and shadow.

Notable recent exhibitions include "Akiko Horio Now" (Nishiwaki City Okanoyama Art Museum, 2021), "Listening to the Sound of the Earth Turning: Between You and Me" (Mori Art Museum, 2022), and "Frame and Wave" (Toyota Municipal Museum of Art, 2023).
